SUMMARY:Get started with Community Energy
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to plan\, fund\, and deliver renewable energy projects to benefit your community \n\n\n\n\nThis event is organised by Community Energy Scotland and WLCAN to help community organisations to take the next step toward energy-efficient\, low-carbon community spaces. It takes place at West Lothian College’s Skills Centre for Sustainable Living\, also known as the Eco House. This training facility helps to train builders in sustainable construction skills and the event will include a tour of the house. \nThis free workshop is for community leaders and active members either curious or already exploring opportunities to install measures such as heat pumps\, solar panels\, battery storage and wind turbines. If your community group owns or has a long-lease on the building you use\, this event is for you. \nNo prior knowledge is required – just bring your interest in learning about the possibilities\, and it’s a bonus if you have any ideas already for improving your community’s energy future. \nLunch will be provided\, and expenses for travel or childcare can be provided if that would otherwise be a barrier to your attendance \nWhat To Expect \n\nAn introduction to the opportunities of community energy\n\n\nCase studies of successful projects by communities in Scotland\n\n\nA step-by-step guide to planning\, funding\, and delivering your community group’s project\n\n\nIntroduction to support available to help you progress\n\n\nAn opportunity to talk through your ideas\, opportunities and challenges\n\nYou’ll leave with better knowledge and tools to take the next steps toward making your community building more energy-efficient and financially sustainable\, and connections for developing your ideas. \nWho Should Attend \n\nRepresentatives from community groups that own or long-term lease the buildings they use\n\n\nCommunity leaders or active group members looking to reduce energy bills and improve comfort in a community spaces\n\n\nThose interested or ready to take practical action to serve their community and strengthen their building’s sustainability for now and in the future\n\nBy the end of the session\, you’ll understand what makes a strong CARES application to access Scottish Government funding\, what typical community-led decarbonisation projects look like in practice\, and where to start with costs\, energy assessments and next steps. \nHosted by: \nCommunity Energy Scotland and West Lothian Climate Action Network in collaboration with Local Energy Scotland\, working in partnership to promote uptake of the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES). \nHOW TO REGISTER: \nScan the QR code on the graphic or click this link to Eventbrite. \nTravel to West Lothian College: Please note parking is very limited at the college and visitors are encouraged to find parking in the nearby multi-storey retail centre car parks.  Visit Google maps.

SUMMARY:National Emergency Briefing Film
DESCRIPTION:This film provides a valuable and timely opportunity to discuss the important matter of the climate and nature crisis within our own local community\, especially given the current media coverage of the wildfires in Britain and Europe that have devastated nature\, wildlife\, homes and livelihoods. The film is hosted by Chris Packham and presents the findings of experts on various aspects of the climate emergency that the public know very little about. The film is an attempt to address this knowledge gap\, provide expert\, evidence-based information on the matter\, and create an opportunity for discussion of what the climate emergency means for us here in Scotland\, and what can be done about it. \nThe Area Commander of the West Lothian Fire Service will be attending the screening\, as will a local councillor. The film will be presented by Mike Harrower from Greenpeace\, Edinburgh and he will lead an informal discussion after the screening.

SUMMARY:People's Emergency Briefing - WLCAN screening
DESCRIPTION:WLCAN is hosting a special screening of People’s Emergency Briefing\, a documentary film aimed at increasing public awareness of climate change\, and highlighting the need for urgent action.  \nOur screening will take place on Monday 28 September\, at 2pm until 4pm\, at Buchan Park Bowling Club\, 60 Greendykes Road\, Broxburn\, EH52 5BS.  \nWe’re hosting the screening primarily for our group and individual members\, so that we can come together as a group and watch the briefing\, before having a discussion around hosting a screening in your local community. However members of the public who live or work in West Lothian are very welcome to join the screening. We need to know if you plan on coming\, so please RSVP to Wendy on the email below.  \nSeeing it for yourself will give you a chance to understand the documentary\, and then hear about what’s involved in hosting a screening. You’ll also hear about the support available to you\, and hear from other members about the conversations it could open up.  \nTo help make screenings in your local community happen\, WLCAN has a limited number of £100 grants available to member groups to support the costs of hosting a People’s Emergency Briefing screening. You’ll hear more about this at the screening. \nWe hope that you can join us – Buchan Park Bowling Club has ample free parking\, and is served by local buses. Use Traveline Scotland to help you plan your journey. Refreshments will also be available. \nPlease RSVP – email wendy@wlcan.scot if you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Community Energy: Support and Opportunities for Community Groups in West Lothian
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking to make your community building more energy efficient\, reduce running costs or explore opportunities for renewable energy? \nJoin us for a free online session exploring the support available to community organisations in West Lothian. \nThe session will introduce the support available through the Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) and how it can help organisations take practical steps towards energy efficiency and community energy projects. \nThe CARES Community Energy Launchpad team will cover the advice\, funding and development support currently available\, including the CARES Community Buildings Fund\, which can provide grant funding to eligible community organisations to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. \nWe’ll also hear from the West Lothian Climate Action Network (WLCAN) about CommonWatt – an opportunity for community organisations interested in generating their own renewable energy\, including exploring solar PV installations on community buildings. \nThis session is particularly relevant to community groups\, charities\, places of worship\, sports clubs and organisations involved in managing community buildings or assets. \nWhether you’re just starting to explore what might be possible or already have an energy project in mind\, come along to find out what support and opportunities are available. \nBook your free place on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Data centres info session
DESCRIPTION:Across Scotland\, a sudden surge in data centre proposals has left communities with many questions. This information session is designed to unpack the global and national trends behind data centres: what they are\, why Scotland’s central belt is being targeted\, and how they operate. It will look at the global data boom and introduce the concept of “waste heat reuse” – specifically\, how modern data centres can be integrated to benefit local communities (such as heating local swimming pools or public buildings). \nUsing the nearby proposed Apatura Freeport AI Energy Campus at West Calder as a real-world case study\, we will look at the balance between economic opportunities (such as local investment\, high-paying jobs\, and community heat-export networks) and environmental concerns (including power grid strain\, water use\, and backup generator noise). With speakers giving different perspectives. \nThis session is designed to be neutral and educational; our goal is to empower local residents with the factual knowledge and planning timelines they need to form their own opinions and engage directly with the decision-making process. \nOpen invite\, but email jocelyn@wlcan.scot if more information needed.
